NOVUSCoat

Energy Efficient & Clean Panels

Have you Novuscoated your solar panels?

Introducing NOVUSCoat
A NanoTech, Super Hydrophobic & Micro pore blocking coating for Solar Panels.

NovusCoat is an easy-to-clean coating which is the brainchild of a multi-disciplinary team of scientists & technologists at the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), an autonomous organization of the Department of Science and Technology for R&D. It’s a coating that is super hydrophobic, with a water contact angle greater than 110°. The hydrophobic property makes water droplets run off the coating and not adhere to the Panel.

Coating

Season proof coating can be applied in normal ambient conditions

Super Hydrophobic

Super Hydrophobic property greater than 110° water contact angle.

Stability

High weather stability and long lasting coating.
Tested - IEC 61646

Transparent

Highly transparent coating with no loss in Transmittance/Power efficiency.

Anti Reflective

No adverse effect on anti reflective coating of panel.

  Panel Cleaning Challenges

Areas of operation are characterized by high dust and humidity

Depositions like Ash Dust, Carbon from vehicles, animal droppings and soot from industrial chimneys

Panels require large amount of water for cleaning

Frequent cleaning is required leading to increase in maintenance activities

Scarcity of water in the areas compel companies to buy water that increases maintenance costs

Dirty Panels result in loss in Transmittance and lesser generation of power denting the revenue

 Solution

A Nano coating that forms a barrier / layer on the surface which is nanometre thick.

It repels water so that water droplets do not adhere to the surface.

It fills the micro-depressions on surface of glass while creating a smooth surface & repelling water.

FAQ

The ‘NOVUSCoat’ easy to clean coating technology is tested according IEC 61215 standard, routinely used to validate the solar panel performance. The lifetime of the coating varies depending on prevailing weather conditions (temperature, moisture, pollutant) and predicted upto 3-4 years

This depends on prevailing weather conditions to which the coating is exposed and probably it can be coated every 3-4 years to achieve the best possible efficiency

The quality of the coating degrades based on the local conditions, dust deposition and cleaning frequency. It is preferable to recoat after every 3 – 4 years to achieve maximum possible efficiency.

No. The coating is highly transparent and doesn’t affect the reflectivity of the solar panel.

The coating can be applied by spray and wipe technique. The coating solution is sprayed on cleaned PV panel using spray gun. Further it is wiped with a wiper to achieve uniformity. The developed coating is exposed to ambient conditions (sunlight, temperature) for few hours for curing to achieve the desired properties. The coating should be applied always in dry conditions.

The coating curing depends on ambient conditions but in general the coating will be completely cured within 24 hours.

Yes, the solar panel should be completely cleaned with water and dried before applying the coating

The adherence of dust is less in coated panel compared to the uncoated PV panels due to coating’s hydrophobic nature and low surface energy.

The coating can sustain a minimum temperature of – 40oC and maximum temperature of 150oC

The climatic conditions, features of the dust particles, and non-standard cleaning procedures will affect the efficiency of the coating. No surfactants should be used in the cleaning as it may damage the coating after cyclic process

Higher concentration of the corrosive chemicals will damage the coating.
Its highly preferable not to expose the coatings to corrosive chemicals as it damages the coating for high contact time.

  • The cleaning frequency of the panels and the bird droppings if not cleaned timely.
  • The TDS of the water should be maintained
  • High pressure water jets should not be used as it may damage
  • The cleaning team should avoid stepping directly onto the panels
  • Detergents and harsh cleaning techniques should be avoided
